Chair Molly McAdams opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed members and guests. The committee reviewed and approved the agenda and the minutes from the February 2011 meeting during Annual Convention in Denver.
Chair Molly McAdams, Vice Chair John Schafer and Bridget Wasser, staff liaison to the committee, led a discussion regarding committee roles and new tools available for committee members.
Bridget Wasser presented the draft 2012 Product Enhancement AR and reviewed the AR process. Led by Molly McAdams and John Schafer, the committee engaged in a discussion on the draft AR and voted to recommend it to the Operating Committee for funding.
Bridget Wasser provided an update on FY 2010–2011 Product Enhancement research program activities. The committee heard a research update from Chris Calkins, Ph.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Vice chair John Schafer provided closing comments and adjourned the meeting.

Chair Molly McAdams opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed the approximate 60 members and guests in attendance. The minutes and agenda of the meeting in July 2010 were reviewed and approved. Larry Corah, Ph.D., from Certified Angus Beef, reviewed the FY2011 RFP Strategic Meeting report. Bridget Wasser, staff liaison to the committee, provided an update on the ongoing checkoff-funded FY 2010 – 2011 Product Enhancement program, 2011 proposals, and the 2010 CBB program evaluation.
Polly Ruhland, CBB, participated in a discussion regarding the FY2010 CBB Evaluation Report. A presentation on the Future of Beef Quality was given by Tom Brink from JBS Five Rivers. Molly McAdams and John Schafer led a discussion on committee integration with the new Industry Long Range Plan and FY 2012 program planning. After Vice Chair John Schafer reviewed new business, he provided closing comments and adjourned the meeting.

Chairman Paul Parker opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed members and guests. The committee reviewed and approved the agenda and minutes from the January, 2010 meeting during Annual Convention in San Antonio.
Chairman Parker asked for FY 2011 authorization request (AR) presentations and Bridget Wasser, staff liaison to the committee, presented the NCBA AR for this program. Led by Chairman Parker and Vice Chair Molly McAdams, the committee engaged in a discussion on this AR and voted to recommend it to the Operating Committee.
Bridget Wasser provided an update on FY 2009 – 2010 Product Enhancement Research program activities.
The committee heard research updates from the following scientists:
- Marbling Development Research – Steve Smith, Ph.D., Texas A & M University
- New Educational Fact Sheets – Dale Woerner, Ph.D., Colorado State University
Vice Chairman Molly McAdams provided closing comments.

Chairman Glen Dolezal opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed members and guests. Dr. Dolezal led discussions on the Industry Long Range Plan and reviewed minutes from the 2009 Annual Convention.
The committee heard research updates from the following scientists:
Impact of Beef Quality Assurance on Beef Quality – Dee Griffin, DVM, University of Nebraska
Expanded Beef Cutout Calculator – Keith Belk, Ph.D., Colorado State University
Bridget Wasser, staff liaison to the committee, provided an update on FY 2008 – 2009 Product Enhancement program activities. Chairman Dolezal asked for FY 2010 Authorization Request (AR) presentations, and Bridget pesented the NCBA AR for this program. The committee engaged in discussion on this AR and voted to recommend that the Operating Committee approve it for funding. Vice Chairman Paul Parker provided closing comments and thanked Chairman Dolezal for his dedication and service to the committee as this meeting wraps up his tenure as Chairman.

Chair Glen Dolezal opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed members and guests. Glen Dolezal led discussions on the Industry Long Range Plan and committee opportunities. Bridget Wasser, staff liaison to the committee, provided an update on the FY 2008 – 2009 product enhancement program.
The committee discussed plans for the FY 2010 program and agreed the following priorities were relevant to their work:
· Make mealtime for Americans easier by being convenient, a terrific value and great tasting.
· Directly associate with a healthy lifestyle.
- Provide thought leaders with science-based industry information.
- Responsibly employ economically viable practices without negatively impacting beef quality or safety.
- Educate targeted decision makers about attributes that differentiate U.S. beef from international competitors.
The committee heard research updates from the following research scientists:
· Market cow vision grading project update – Keith Belk, Colorado State University & Nav Analytics
· Beef Carcass value optimization: Optimized fabrication and value – Keith Belk, Colorado State University
· In-plant tenderness validation project update – Carol Lorenzen, University of Missouri
· Fat development in pre-harvest cattle – Steve Smith, Texas A & M

Glen Dolezal (chair) led discussions on the Industry Operating Plan and Strategies. Bucky Gwartney, staff liaison to the committee, provided an update on the FY 2008 product enhancement program managed by NCBA.

Glen Dolezal asked the committee to submit Authorization Requests from other Industry Organizations and contractors if there were any. There were none. Bucky Gwartney presented the Product Enhancement Research draft AR prepared by NCBA staff. Following the AR presentations, Paul Parker, committee vice chair, led the committee members through a discussion of the ARs and a final recommendation for the Operating Committee.
The committee heard research updates from the following research scientists working on FY 2008 projects:
• Carcass optimization and innovative fabrication – Daryl Tatum, Colorado State University, and Chris Calkins, University of Nebraska
• Economic value of beef tenderness – Ted Schroeder, Kansas State University
• Instrument Grading and Claims update – Marty O’Connor, USDA Agricultural Marketing Service
• Future genomics for the beef industry – Ronnie Green, Pfizer Animal Health and Clare Gill, Texas A & M University.�

Bill Rishel (chair) and Glen Dolezal (vice chair) led discussions on the long range plan, current industry planning factors and opportunities for the program going into 2009. An update on the FY 2008 product enhancement program was given. Committee members were given copies of recent publications printed since the July meeting.
After the report from the Product Enhancement Research Advisory Panel Report, committee members received the following updates from guests:
• USDA update on next generation technologies for instrument grading and product labeling claims, Craig Morris, USDA, AMS
• How does the Product Enhancement program fit into the global markets? Paul Clayton, USMEF
• The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center and the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium, what’s the future? Mohammed Koohmaraie, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center.

2007 Cattle Industry Summer Conference – Joint Product Enhancement Committee Meeting Report:
Bill Rishel (chair) and Glen Dolezal (vice chair) led discussions with 17 committee members and twenty guests that attended the joint industry product enhancement commiittee meeting. Industry strategies and the long range plan were reviewed and an update on the FY 2007 product enhancement program was given.
The upcoming National beef instrument assessment plan III (NBIAP III) meeting was discussed which will develop a roadmap for future instrumentation research efforts. .
The product enhancmenet AR was presented, discussed and approved. An Attachment A addressing research related to international markets was also reviewed and approved.
Several research updates were given and included the following:
- Dark cutters and Near infrared update, Brad Morgan, Oklahoma State University
- Hyperspectral imaging, Chris Calkins, University of Nebraska
- Non-conformities research update, Jeff Savell, Texas A and M University and John Scanga, Colorado State University
- Carcass optimization and fabrication, John Scanga, Colorado State University
- Instrument Grading and Marketing Claims update, Marty O’Connor, USDA Ag Marketing Service
