2012 Cattle Industry Convention – Joint Human Nutrition Committee Meeting Report:

Chairman Lana Slaten opened the meeting with introductions, then led approval of the agenda and minutes from the last committee meeting.  

Penny Kris-Etherton, PhD, RD, distinguished professor of nutrition at the Pennsylvania State University, gave an overview of the Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet (BOLD) study. 

A discussion on Request for Proposals (RFP) was led by Shalene McNeill, PhD, RD, staff liaison to the committee. Clara Lau, PhD, staff liaison to the committee, provided a FY 2012 program update. FY 2013 planning initiation discussion was led by Chairman Lana Slaten.

Chair Lana Slaten opened the meeting with introductions, welcomed members and guests and led the approval of the minutes from the committee meeting in February 2011.

Shalene McNeill, PhD, RD, staff liaison to the committee, provided a program update report on FY2011 nutrition research programs, including sharing the five year research roadmap.

Jeff Wilson of  Montana addressed the committee regarding the benefits of  omega-3 fats.

Staff presented the FY2012 draft AR’s and Chair Lana Slated facilitated committee discussion on the AR. After discussion, the committee unanimously agreed to recommend the AR as presented to the Operating Committee for funding. 

After closing remarks were made, the meeting was adjourned.

Chair Richard Thorpe opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed members and guests.  Shalene McNeill, PhD, RD, staff liaison to the committee, provided an update on current programs and research projects. 

Vice Chair Lana Slaten and Dr. McNeill presented draft Authorization Requests for FY2011 prepared by NCBA staff and by other organizations. Chair Richard Thorpe led the committee through a discussion of the ARs and a recommendation for those to be submitted to the Operating Committee. 

Michael Roussell, PhD Candidate from the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Pennsylvania State University shared the research from the Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet (BOLD) Study on the beneficial effects of a heart-healthy diet including lean beef.   The committee also heard an update on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines status and NCBA nutrition policy.

Chair Richard Thorpe opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed members and guests. Shalene McNeill, PhD, RD, staff liaison to the committee, provided an update on FY 2009 programs. Dominik Alexander, PhD, reported on the Exponent Red Meat and Cancer Assessment and discussed opportunities to evaluate Red Meat and Cardiovascular Disease.

Chair Richard Thorpe opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed members and guests.  Gary Taubes, journalist and author of Good Calories, Bad Calories, presented “Why We Get Fat” to the committee.  Shalene McNeill, PhD, RD, staff liaison to the committee, provided a report on the status of the FY2008 – 2009 nutrition research programs.  Chairman Thorpe led the committee through a program discussion.  Dr. McNeill updated the committee members on the Nutrition Roundtable.  

 The committee discussed plans for the FY 2010 program and agreed the following priorities were relevant to their work:

• Own protein in the minds of consumers.
• Be a part of government and health organizations’ nutrition guidance.
• Directly associate with a healthy lifestyle.       �����

Chair Becky Walth opened the meeting with introductions and welcomed members and guests.  Leslie Thompson, PhD and Jennifer Leheska, PhD, RD provided an update to the committee on the status of the USDA Nutrient Database Improvement Project.  Shalene McNeill, PhD, RD, staff liaison to the committee, reported on other FY2008 programs.

2008 Cattle Industry Convention – Joint Human Nutrition Research Committee Meeting Report:

Chair Becky Walth and Shalene McNeill, PhD, RD, staff liaison, provided an update on the 2008 Nutrition Research Roundtable held Thursday, February 7, during the convention in Reno. A research update was provided by Dr. Nancy Rodriguez, PhD, RD from the University of Connecticut. She is currently conducting Checkoff-funded human nutrition research on beef, body composition and weight loss.

Becky Walth led discussion on the review of the 2008 nutrition research program which included currently funded projects as well as the responses to the FY2008 Requests for Proposals.

The balance of the meeting was spent planning and prioritizing for the FY2009 program.

Research updates were provided by Nancy Krebs, M.D., M.S., and Frank Nuttall, M.D., Ph.D. who are both currently conducting Check off funded human nutrition research. Dr. Krebs is Association Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics and her research program focuses on Beef as a Weaning Food for Breastfed Infants. Dr. Nuttall, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and is conducting research on the The Role of Moderate Protein Diets in the Management of Diabetes. The committee engaged the researchers with numerous questions as they were very excited about the possibilities of the research they are conducting.

Chairwoman, Becky Walth, led discussion over the Nutrition Research Program Update for FY 2007, which included the following topics:

· Protein Summit Report

· Cancer Research Review

· Experimental Biology

· Fact Sheets

· Request for Research Proposals (RFP)

The Draft Authorization Requests for FY 2008 was approved by the committee. Additionally, the committee approved the AR Titled: USMEF/ NCBA Research Initiatives.
