2012 Cattle Industry Summer Conference – Joint Nutrition and Health Committee Meeting Report:

NCBA and MICA staff presented updates about the checkoff-funded 2012 Nutrition Influencer program during a 25-minute webinar for the Joint Nutrition and Health Committee on Thursday, July 19, 2012. 

This committee heard a presentation by McMaster University protein researcher Stuart Phillips, PhD. , who spoke about about beef as a nutrient dense food to support muscle health in aging, as well as the checkoff’s project assessing the effect of varying levels of beef protein and soy protein on muscle protein synthesis and muscle protein breakdown in middle-aged men.  Staff then proceeded to share presentations about proposal FY2013 Authorization Requests for checkoff funding (NCBA, $923,000 and MICA, $30,000), both of which the committee recommended for approval by the Operating Committee.

The Joint Nutrition and Health Committee heard updates about nutrition influencer programs, and discussed FY2013 planning. Feedback from the 2010 AR evaluation was also shared and applied to current programming. A brief report on the checkoff’s plans for implementation of nutrition labeling in the meat case was also provided. 

Staff shared updates on FY2012 programs including BOLD (Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet) research outreach; checkoff partnerships and coalitions; results from checkoff-funded exhibit and session at the 2011 Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics’ Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo; the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative efforts, including the Food, Farm and Science influencer event, involvement at regional health professional meetings, and relaunch of NEBPI.org website.

The committee had 10 members and 16 guests in attendance.

The 2011 Nutrition Influencer AR program update was presented by NCBA staff during a 30-minute Webinar for the Joint Nutrition and Health Committee on Monday, July 25.

At the Aug. 3 meeting in Orlando, the committee then heard a presentation of the FY2010 Nutrition Influencer Authorization Request (AR) evaluation conducted by the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and had 10 members present with 17 guests.

NCBA and Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NBPI) staff shared presentations about their proposed FY2012 ARs. The committee recommended the AR presented by NCBA for approval in the amount of $923,000. The AR tactic presented by NBPI was recommended for approval in the amount of $30,000.

Committee members also entertained and approved a number of Attachment A’s, including a program presented by NCBA staff that includes identifying and building a partnership with additional health professional organizations such as physicians, nurses or fitness professionals. Recommended funding for this Attachment A is $275,000.

NBPI staff also suggested a program requiring additional funds to reach dietetic interns in the northeastern United States through presentations and tours centering on beef nutrition and production. Recommended funding for this Attachment A is $30,000.

The Joint Nutrition and Health Committee discussed the draft Long Range Plan, heard updates on nutrition policy and nutrition influencers programs and reviewed two expiring resolutions. The committee had 14 members present with 10 guests. The Committee was joined by the Joint Public Relations Subcommittee for a results presentation and recipe sampling featuring lean beef as a breakfast option including the Beefy Sweet Potato Hash & Beef & Spinach Breakfast Sandwich.

After discussing the draft Long Range Plan, the Nutrition and Health Committee believe they primarily contribute to two strategies: Improve Domestic Consumer Preference for Beef and Strengthen the Image of Beef and the Beef Industry along with several initiatives:

Michele Murray provided a brief staffing and agency update including a nutrition agency transition from Edelman Public Relations to Porter-Novelli. 

Polly Ruhland, CBB, led a brief discussion on the 2010 AR evaluation and shared that the Nutrition Influencer has been selected for review by the Joint Evaluation Advisory Committee.

The Committee reviewed two expiring resolutions: N&H 1.6 Informative Nutrient Labeling and N&H 1.7 Dietary Recommendation Issues. After careful consideration and discussion, the Committee provided recommendations for adjusting language on the two expiring policies. The Committee voted to reinstate this policy as an amendment and shared this information with the Resolutions Committee.

Shelley Johnson, RD, provided updated on FY2011 programs and recent policy.

  • Dietary Guidelines translation and development of resources available to health professionals and State Beef Councils 

The Joint Nutrition and Health Committee were honored to hear a presentation from Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee member, Roger Clemens, PhD, from University of Southern California.

This committee heard program updates and had 13 members present with two guests. The committee joined the Public Relations Subcommittee for a presentation about the media and influencer audiences. The committee also joined the Joint Human Nutrition Research Committee for a presentation by Penn State researcher Mike Roussell on the latest checkoff-funded research. Checkoff staff shared updates on FY 2010 programs and presented the FY 2011 Authorization Request.

Committee Objective: The Joint Nutrition and Health Committee is a joint industry committee consisting of members representing the NCBA Policy and Federation of State Beef Councils Divisions and the Cattlemen’s Beef Board.  These individuals, as a committee acting in concert and as a group, have an overall responsibility of carrying out the following purpose.  The committee promotes positive food policy and information for beef to key audiences.  The committee sets the industry’s nutrition and health priorities – including policy, communications and research, communicates those priorities to internal and external audiences, and allocates resources according to the priorities.  In doing so, the committee will ensure that the beef industry speaks with one voice on nutrition and health issues to consumers, the media and other opinion leaders.
