Dick Sherron,
Chair
Craig Uden, Vice Chair

Dick Sherron, Chair, welcomed committee members to the meeting and introduced J.O. “Bo” Reagan to present an overview of the newly restructured Research, Education and Innovation Group (REI).  Bo explained that the new group structure allows all the checkoff-funded work improving the quality and safety of beef from farm to fork to be housed in one department.  This includes research on safety, product and nutrition, education of producers through Beef Quality Assurance (BQA), and innovation through new product development and culinary initiatives.  It all starts with the consumer’s tastes and attitudes which places market research at both the beginning and end of the process.

The REI staff presented program overviews of the work conducted under the direction of the six committees in the REI group – Joint Beef Safety Research Committee, Joint Human Nutrition Research Committee, Joint New Product & Culinary Initiatives Committee, Joint Producer Education Committee, Joint Product Enhancement Committee, and the Joint Market Research Working Group.

Dr. Ashby Green, vice president of producer education, presented the first ever BQA awards to beef and dairy producers who exemplify the level of commitment producers across the country demonstrate daily in areas of BQA, such as care and husbandry, high standards for product quality, and implementation of BQA best management practices. Anne Burkholder of Will Feed Inc., Cozad, NE, was the recipient of the Beef BQA award and Jim Docheff Jr. & Family of Diamond D Dairy, Longmont, CO, received the Dairy BQA award.

Additionally, attendees heard presentations from Tom Woodward on the Producer Education Strategic Plan and Craig Morris, USDA/AMS Deputy Administrator, who provided an update of USDA issues.

Before adjourning, Dick Sherron led members through a discussion of their responsibilities during their individual committee meetings.

After the committee meetings, committee members re-convened in the Group Meeting to hear committee reports.

Keith Hansen, Chair

Dick Sherron, Vice Chair

Keith Hansen, Chair, led members of the Research and Knowledge Management Group of committees through a discussion of their responsibilities during upcoming afternoon meetings, including the process of choosing relevant planning factors affecting their committee work.

The R&KM staff from each of the four program areas (safety, product enhancement, human nutrition and market research) concluded the meeting with an historical overview of how checkoff-funded research has impacted specific issues challenging the beef industry or opportunities to increase value.

 - The safety timeline illustrated how the checkoff has identified and addressed beef safety through pre- and post-harvest interventions and outreach programs since 1992.

 - The Product Enhancement timeline described the muscle profiling process and highlighted the successes at retail and foodservice.

 - Beginning in the 1970’s, when the guidance to eat less red meat first surfaced, the human nutrition timeline showed how the industry responded with increased research as well as production adjustments to produce leaner beef.

 - The market research timeline illustrated how the combination of consumer research, product enhancement and industry adoption of best practices throughout the supply chain, beginning in the 1990’s, resulted in a more tender beef product and greater consumer satisfaction.
