2010 Cattle Industry Summer Conference – Joint Beef Safety Committee Meeting Report:

Chairman Jeff Clausen and Vice Chair Todd Allen led the Joint Industry Beef Safety Committee through an agenda providing program updates, guest speakers, and the FY 2011 Authorization Request discussion.  Keith Belk, PhD, Colorado State University updated the committee on validating safety systems, and Kristina Butts provided a policy update.  Brooke Davis of Lopez Foods and a member of BIFSCo shared a member’s perspective of the benefits of BIFSCo.  Dr. Mandy Carr, staff liaison to the committee, and Michelle Rossman, member of the food safety staff, provided an update on the FY 2010 program and an overview of recently completed projects. 

Chairman Clausen and Dr. Carr led the committee through a discussion of the draft FY 2011 Authorization Request.  The committee recommended an AR for submission to the Operating Committee.

Chairman Duane Theuninck and Vice Chair Mark Riechers led the Joint Industry Beef Safety Committee through an agenda providing program updates, guest speakers, and the FY 2010 Authorization Request (AR) discussion. Dr. Mandy Carr, staff liaison to the committee, and Michelle Rossman, member of the food safety staff, presented an overview of recently completed checkoff beef safety projects and an update on the status of the FY 2009 research program. Kristina Butts provided a policy update for the committee and Wendy Jenkins shared recent consumer survey results involving safety behaviors in the home.

Committee members heard from Dr. Guy Loneragan, West Texas A&M University who reviewed the progress of pre-harvest safety research and discussed future potential for this research area. Dr. Theuninck and Dr. Carr led the committee through a review of the industry planning factors, committee priorities, and the draft FY 2010 Authorization Request. The committee recommended the NCBA AR for submission to the Operating Committee.

Chairman Duane Theuninck and Vice Chair Mark Riechers led the Joint Industry Beef Safety Committee through an agenda providing an overview and opportunity for discussion of the FY 2008 and 2009 Beef Safety Research Program.  In addition, committee members heard from Dr. Dave Theno, retired industry leader from Jack-in-the-Box, about the utilization of research in the industry, the importance of BIFSCo’s efforts, and future safety challenges.Following a policy update and the Beef Safety Research Advisory Panel report, the committee discussed plans for the FY 2010 program.  The members agreed the following priorities were relevant to the work of the committee:

 

·        Take proactive steps to protect public health from emerging threats.

·        Protect consumers from E. coli and Salmonella.

·        Provide thought leaders with science-based industry information.

·        Responsibly employ economically viable practices without negatively impacting beef quality or safety.

Chairman Duane Theuninck and Vice Chair Mark Riechers led the Joint Industry Beef Safety Committee through an agenda providing a FY 2007 and 2008 Beef Safety Program update and discussion.  In addition, committee members heard a presentation from Dr. Todd Bacon, Director Quality Systems, US Supply Chain Management, McDonald’s Corporation on McDonald’s perspectives on food safety.  Tom Edrington, USDA, Ag Research Services, presented research opportunities within the industry.

Chairman Duane Theuninck and Vice Chair Mark Riechers led the Joint Industry Beef Safety Committee through an agenda providing an overview and discussion of the FY 2008 Beef Safety Program. In addition, committee members received updates on the current beef safety environment from two guests: Dr. Dan Engeljohn, Deputy Assistant Administrator, Office of Policy, Program, and Employee Development, Food Safety and Inspection Service and Dr. Mohammed Koohmaraie, Director, USDA-ARS Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center NE, who updated the committee on emerging beef safety threats.

Following a policy update and the Beef Safety Research Advisory Panel report, the committee discussed plans for the FY2009 program.

2007 Cattle Industry Summer Conference – Joint Beef Safety Committee Meeting Report:

Chairman Mike Engler and Vice Chairman Duane Theuninck led the Joint Industry Beef Safety Committee through a program that included an update of the FY 2007 Beef Safety Program and discussions of how beef safety research ties to the long range plan, the safety environment, and industry strategies. An Authorization Request for FY 2008 was presented, discussed and approved. An Attachment A addressing safety research needs related to international markets was also discussed and approved. The meeting concluded after a safety policy update and a research review from Tom Edrington, Ph.D. of the USDA-ARS laboratory in College Station, TX.
